C'est dans le Puy-de-Dôme et le Maine-et-Loire que le nom est le plus répandu. Il s'agit apparemment d'un toponyme, nom d'un hameau à Saint-Jean-des-Ollières (63). On trouve également le nom Rosney (61, 76, 22) qui pourrait évoquer la Mare du Rosney à Boisset-les-Prévanches (27). Ces formes sont à rapprocher de Rosnay, toponyme assez répandu, nom d'une commune de Vendée, utilisé aussi comme patronyme. Sens incertain : à noter cependant que le toponyme Rosne est toujours lié à la présence d'un cours d'eau.
